Course Overview: Prescription opioids, heroin and fentanyl use is increasing in the United States along with addiction overdose and death. More people died of drug addiction in the United States in recent years than ever before. Nearly half of all opioid overdose deaths involve a prescription opioid. This course reviews the history of the opioid epidemic while also looking at dentistry's role in the opioid epidemic. Management of acute and postoperative pain will be discussed along with safe prescribing techniques to avoid abuse and diversion.

Course Overview: According to Gallup and the Williams Institute, approximately 4.5% of US adults identified as LGBT in 2017 (about 14.65 million people). This includes about 1.4 million people who identify as transgender (0.6% of the US adult population in 2016). Millennials born between 1981 to 1996 are the most likely to identify as LGBT (8.2%). Given these percentages, it is obvious that dentists and dental hygienists will treat substantial numbers of patients from LGBTQ+ backgrounds. This continuing education workshop provides an introduction to the question of what it means to provide patient-centered care for patients from LGBTQ+ backgrounds.

Course Overview:  Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health concern in the US, affecting over 40 million adults (19.1%) in the last year, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) 2023 report. Major depression is the second most common mental illness. A Gallup poll shows a nearly 10% increase in the percentage of US adults diagnosed with depression (29.0%) from 2015 to 2023, with 17.8% currently being treated. Dental professionals should be interested in these facts as mental illnesses impact patients’ oral health, hygiene, and interactions with dental care providers. This 3-credit hour CE course provides essential information for providing optimal care.
