OVERVIEW
This twelve month ADA-accredited fellowship includes clinical, didactic, research, and service components. It will train an orthodontist in diagnosis of growth and development, interdisciplinary treatment planning, and clinical execution of orthodontic and dentofacial orthopedic services to a large clinical volume patients who have congenital and acquired craniofacial abnormalities.
Craniofacial Fellowship Description
The focus of this subspecialty of orthodontics includes:
- Cleft lip and palate
- Syndromic craniosynostosis and other craniofacial anomalies
- Dentofacial deformities
- Craniofacial surgery
- Orthognathic surgery
- Distraction osteogenesis
- Nasoalveolar molding
- Special care orthodontics
The fellow will take an active role on a cleft and craniofacial conference at the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, where it will have the opportunity to work with different specialists:
- Nursing
- Social work
- Neuropsychology
- ENT
- Audiology
- Speech Therapy
- Oral Maxillofacial Surgery
- Pediatric Plastic Surgery
The fellow is encouraged to participate in craniofacial and cleft conferences, review treatment plans and progress notes. All complex treatments are discussed with the attending on a case-by-case basis. New patient exams are done on a regular basis and fellows work up cases (clinical exam, study models analysis, CBCT evaluations) and develop treatment plans with the faculty. The fellow, along with plastic surgery fellow, will perform all surgical treatment plans, cephalometric prediction tracings. They are also welcome to participate in the OR activities/surgical procedures.
Clinically, the fellowship will provide you with experience in the following areas:
- Newborn assessment for need of early intervention
- Presurgical orthopedics (nasoalveolar molding) for infants born with cleft lip and palate
- Growth and orthodontic management from the primary through adult dentition and attainment of skeletal maturity
- Surgical and orthodontic treatment planning, pre and post-surgical orthodontic management, surgical splint design and construction, and insertion of surgical fixation splints in the operating room
REQUIREMENTS
- DDS or DMD degree or equivalent
- Completion of an accredited Orthodontics certificate of (at least) 2 year program
- Proficiency in English language (submission of TOEFL score for international applicants)
COSTS/TUITION
A stipend is available.
The fellows are responsible for their own living, housing, health insurance and visa expenses related to the program.

HOW TO APPLY
The 2025-2026 Craniofacial Fellowship application must be completed by September 1st, 2024. Please provide the following document:
- Personal statement including career goals
- Curriculum vitae
- Three letters of recommendation from Dental School and/or Orthodontic faculty, including Chair of Orthodontics
- Official Transcripts from a recognized dental school in the original language accompanied by a certified English translation, and Certification of an Orthodontic Program (minimum 2 years) is required.
FOR INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS
In additional to the above documents, please submit the following:
- Official transcripts from foreign University where English is not the official language of instruction (Please note: Photocopies are not acceptable, even if they are notarized).
- Official course-by-course evaluation from Educational Credential Evaluators, Inc. or World Educational Services for all transcripts received outside the U.S. where English is not the official language of instruction.
- Must provide documentation of English language proficiency by submitting TOEFL scores. A minimum TOEFL iBT (internet‐based test) of 84 is required.
