We are committed to upholding the highest standards of safety across all aspects of our operations, including classrooms, clinics, and research environments.Our comprehensive approach is coordinated by the Director of Safety & Emergency Preparedness, Brandonn Perry, who guides our policies and preparedness on campus. This role ensures that safety protocols, emergency response plans, and infection control measures are developed, implemented, and routinely reviewed. Our CommitmentEmergency PreparednessEmergency planning and response are developed in partnership with DPSS Emergency Management.Regular drills and training for all students, staff, and faculty.Comprehensive plans for a wide range of scenarios, including severe weather, fire, medical emergencies, and campus security incidents.Timely communication through multiple platforms.Infection Prevention in Clinical SettingsProtocols are strictly governed by the American Dental Association (ADA), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and the U-M Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) office.Measures include:Rigorous hand hygiene procedures and PPE use.Instrument sterilization and frequent surface disinfection.Safe handling and disposal of biomedical waste and sharps.Continuous education and monitoring for compliance. Research SafetyResearch safety is based on standards set by the University of Michigan Research Safety program and EHS, as well as School of Dentistry-specific protocols.Our approach entails:Mandatory safety training for all research personnel.Strict use and oversight of PPE, engineering controls, and laboratory best practices.Proper management of hazardous materials and wastes.Incident reporting, inspections, and ongoing improvements.Special protocols for dental materials, equipment, and patient/specimen management.
