Awards For Student Researchers Dominic D. Dziewiatkowski Award for Excellence In Research This award was created in 1989 in memory of Dr. Dominic Dziewiatkowski, professor emeritus of dentistry and first chair of the Department of Oral Biology. The annual award was established by Dr. Dziewiatkowski's daughter, Jane Damren, and her husband, Samuel Damren, to continue his interest in and commitment to excellence in student research. A certificate and monetary award are presented annually in his memory to honor an outstanding student researcher. More Information Previous Award Winners Robert G. and L. Georgine Craig Biomaterials Award This award was created in memory of Dr. Robert Craig who joined the faculty of the School of Dentistry in 1957. He served as chair of the Dental Materials Department from 1969-87. Since coming to the University of Michigan, Professor Craig distinguished himself as a dental scholar, researcher, administrator, and teacher, who had a direct impact on the practice of dentistry worldwide. Robert G. Craig, Marcus L. Ward Professor of Dentistry, retired from active faculty status on August 31, 1993. This award was established by Dr. Craig’s three daughters (Susan, Barbara and Katherine) to continue his interest in biomaterials research and his commitment to the education of students in the School of Dentistry. More Information Award Criteria Awards for Prosthodontic Graduate Students Dr. Richard H. Kingery Memorial Award for Excellence in Complete Denture Prosthetics The Dr. Richard H. Kingery Memorial Award honors the enduring legacy of Dr. Richard H. Kingery, a founding member of the American Board of Prosthodontics and former chairman of the Complete Denture Prosthetics Department (now the Department of Biologic and Materials Sciences & Prosthodontics - BMSP) at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry.This award recognizes and supports third-year prosthodontic residents who exhibit excellence in complete denture prosthetics and are planning to pursue licensure as prosthodontists. Preference will be given to those residents who hold a DDS from the University of Michigan or an undergraduate degree from Michigan State University, reflecting Dr. Kingery’s academic roots. More Information Award Criteria & Application Joseph A. Clayton Scholarship Fund/Foundation The Joseph A. Clayton Graduate Scholarship Fund/Foundation was created in June 1998. The fund is designed to benefit residents enrolled in the prosthodontic graduate program who are working toward an accredited M.S. For 25 years, until his retirement in 1996, Dr. Clayton helped develop, direct, and teach in the department's graduate program. He knows from personal experience how important financial support can be for graduate students in dentistry. Dr. Clayton states that, "the best gift we can offer anyone is an education. It will last a lifetime." More Information Award Criteria & Application Edward J. Billy Scholarship Fund/Foundation The Edward J. Billy Scholarship will be awarded to a resident currently enrolled in the Prosthodontics Graduate Program at the University of Michigan, School of Dentistry. A committee of graduate faculty will review the nature of the fund and the intent of the award and nominate a resident to be the recipient. The scholarship will be awarded on an annual basis and students will need to reapply each year. More Information Award Criteria Prosthodontic Awards for Senior DDS Students Caulk/Dentsply Award in Removable Prosthodontics Presented to the senior student who has completed with distinction the studies of removable prosthodontics. A plaque is awarded to the student. An engraved nameplate with his or her name and year of graduation is placed on a second plaque that remains at the school. P.C. Lowery Award in Removable ProsthodonticsEach year a grant of $100 is contributed by Dr. Percy C. Lowery of Detroit as a prize to the one or two students in the senior class who show the greatest proficiency and advancement in the field of complete denture prosthodontics.Floyd A. Peyton AwardAn annual monetary and certificate award is presented to the senior student who demonstrates the greatest interest and excellence in biomaterials. The Francis B. Vedder Society of Crown And Bridge Prosthodontics Award A certificate and monetary award are presented annually to a member of the senior class for outstanding achievement in fixed prosthodontics. More Information Frank Smith Memorial Award in Removable Partial DenturesThe School of Dentistry has created an award honoring Dr. Franklin Wesley Smith. A $200 award will be presented annually to a senior dental student who demonstrates clinical excellence in the area of removable partial dentures and exhibits a commitment to superb care.
