In the event of damage, you are encouraged to work directly with AppleCare+ for repairs. Depending on the issues, there may be a cost that you would be responsible for. The Apple Pencil and the keyboard add quite a bit of functionality to the iPad, but some activities like using a Remote Desktop may require a traditional operating system and mouse input. UM does provide services for buying personal hardware and software, potentially at a discounted price.If I decline the iPad, can I get credit towards another device?No. You either accept the iPad or you don’t.What if I already have an iPad or other device I prefer to use?The iPad you receive from the School of Dentistry will have some specific apps for productivity and security. You can use another device if you prefer, though you may encounter some work that was optimized for iPad use.Can I take the iPad home with me over breaks or on vacation?Yes. You may use it as you choose as if it were your personal device.Where can I learn more about my new iPad?Some resources are linked on this page. Check out the iPad 101 Canvas site.Who actually owns the devices?The devices are owned by the School of Dentistry while you are enrolled with the school. You will have the option to purchase the device at a depreciated value when you graduate.What if I withdraw or transfer from the School of Dentistry?If you leave before graduating, you may need to return the equipment or pay its depreciated value if you wish to keep it.Can I customize my device?For the most part, yes. We will manage these devices with a Mobile Device Management system (Jamf), which will require a strong passcode but will allow you to customize most settings. This system will only be used to add/update a few suggested apps and iPad OS to make sure everyone is on the same version of software.Are there prohibited uses for my iPad (i.e., Will Netflix be locked out)?You are encouraged to use the iPad as if it were your own, so nothing from the Apple App store is off limits. You are only asked not to try to jailbreak your iPad or otherwise try to remove the management system that the School of Dentistry has added.What information is being collected?The School of Dentistry cannot and will not be tracking usage data on this equipment. Data may be tracked by Wi-Fi networks and internet service providers you use.Instructor FAQHow can faculty and staff benefit from the iPad program?Faculty and staff will know that all School of Dentistry students have access to the same iPad hardware and software. This can make it easier to design activities for collaboration and learning by using a common toolset.Will all instructors be receiving iPads?Currently only instructors who join our Instructor Innovation Program are receiving limited-time loans of iPad equipment kits identical to what the students have received.Will I be required to change my course to specifically include iPads?No, any specific use of iPads is left to the discretion of instructors, however Dental Informatics would be happy to assist any instructor wanting to think through integrating them.What if a student leaves an iPad in my classroom, lab, clinic, or office?Please drop off the iPad at the Dental Informatics help desk in the basement of the dental building.
