About

Each spring, a team of dental students and two faculty members travel to Roatán, Honduras to implement preventive and restorative oral health care in a mobile dental bus and in a local clinic. Working in teams, students are able to provide care to both adults and children in the community and surrounding area during the one-week trip. Services provided include oral exams, oral health/hygiene instructions, fluoride varnish, fillings, SDF, and extractions, as well as referral to the local clinic for more advanced restorative, endodontic, orthodontic or surgical treatment.
Cultural experiences involve a lot of time spent in and around the water. This might include relaxing at the beach and swimming in the ocean, zip lining, boating, snorkeling, or swimming with dolphins.
Third-year dental students apply for the GIOCH Honduras Program in the fall term and undergo an interview process for selection. Once selected, the team meets regularly through the fall and winter terms to prepare for the trip.
