Back to the Stern Lab Principal investigator Image Tomer Stern, Ph.D. Assistant Professor of Quantitative Biology Department of Biologic & Materials Sciences Center for Computational Medicine & Bioinformatics Department of Biomedical Engineering [email protected] Dr. Stern earned his undergraduate degree in Computer Science and Bioinformatics from the Academic College of Tel Aviv–Yaffo, Israel, followed by an M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Computational Biology from the Weizmann Institute of Science under Elazar Zelzer. His doctoral research focused on bone morphological development in the mouse model. He completed postdoctoral research at Princeton University with Nobel laureate Eric Wieschaus and Stanislav Shvartsman, analyzing cell activity during Drosophila gastrulation. He holds an EMBO Long-Term Fellowship and received the Hammer Scholarship from Israel's Ministry of Education. Lab members Image Lydia Glowney, M.Sc. Lab technician [email protected] I earned both my bachelor's degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology and my master's degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Michigan. In my role as a lab technician, I support ongoing research projects in the lab and focus on live imaging of Drosophila embryos to study embryogenesis. Outside of the lab, I enjoy trying new recipes, working out, and spending time with my cats! Image Riya Samanta, Ph.D. Postdoc [email protected] I completed my B.Sc./M.Sc. in Physics at IISER-Kolkata, India, and then finished my Ph.D. in Biophysics at UMD-College Park, US. These days, I apply machine-learning algorithms to improve image segmentation and tracking, so we can understand the beautiful chaos of fruit fly embryogenesis, one embryo movie at a time. Outside the lab, I'm usually painting, battling Octordles, Nerdles, and Sudokus, or falling into delightful rabbit holes about penguins, elephants, and other excellent creatures. Image Jialin Liu, Ph.D. Postdocs, Co-mentored by Tzumin Lee [email protected] I got my Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, and I am currently trying to explore how genome controls lineage-guided fly brain wiring using AI + 3D spatial transcriptomics. I like video games, badminton, and singing! I love my cat even though I am allergic to him :) Image Meng-Jia (Justin) Lian, D.D.S. Ph.D. students, Oral Health Sciences [email protected] As a (former) dentist from Taiwan now pursuing my degree in Oral Health Sciences, I transitioned into research to study bone and cartilage morphogenesis using high-resolution in toto imaging and computational modeling. Outside the lab, I am a semi-professional photographer whose work has been featured on local election campaign billboards across the city. Image Yidi Shao, M.Sc. Ph.D. students, Biomedical Engineering [email protected] Hi, I'm Yidi. I earned my M.Sc. in ECE from UC San Diego and am now a Ph.D. student in biomedical engineering at the University of Michigan, working in the Stern Lab. My work focuses on computational algorithms for reconstructing Drosophila embryos. In my free time, I enjoy playing Roco Kingdom and watching Canada geese forage. Image Aayush Dahal Master's students, Bioinformatics [email protected] I am a graduate researcher in the Stern Lab, where I use deep learning to reconstruct genome-scale phenome spaces for developing mouse organs. Outside the lab, I enjoy travelling, playing and watching soccer, and trying out foods from different places. Image Maggie Wang Undergraduate students, Molecular, Cellular & Developmental Biology [email protected] Hey! I'm a pre-dental student from New York and I do segmentations and dissections for the lab. I'm pretty fashionable when I'm not wearing a lab coat and I love thrifting. My current goals: learn how to DJ and get into dental school. Image Yufeng Zhang Undergraduate students, Biomedical Engineering, Dual-degree program with Shanghai Jiao Tong University [email protected] I am an undergraduate student pursuing a dual-degree program in ECE at SJTU and BME at UMich, driven by a deep fascination with internal human regulation. Currently, I am contributing to the development of software for embryonic cell segmentation. Outside of the lab, I enjoy taking relaxing walks around North Campus. Image Maya Chertorisky Undergraduate students [email protected] Hi! I'm Maya, an undergraduate student with interests in developmental biology, genetics, and dentistry. My previous research and clinical experiences in pain management and oral health sparked my fascination with how developmental processes establish the foundation for how our bodies function. I'm excited to contribute to the lab's research while continuing to grow as a researcher. Outside the lab, I enjoy fashion journalism and serve as an editor for MASH Magazine. As a New York City native, I love exploring the city and trying as many coffee shops as possible.
