A New Electronic Health Record is Coming to the School of Dentistry

The University of Michigan School of Dentistry is preparing to launch a new electronic health record system using Epic, one of the most widely used health record platforms in the country.

As part of this change, the School of Dentistry will begin using MyChart, Epic’s secure online patient portal. MyChart will become an important tool for managing your dental care with us.

This transition will help us provide safer, more coordinated, and more convenient care for our patients.

What Is Changing?

The School of Dentistry is moving to a new electronic health record, or EHR, powered by Epic.

The M-Dentistry MiHealth EHR is the secure digital system we use to manage patient information, including dental treatment plans, medical history, medications, allergies, appointments, billing, and other important details related to your care.

Our dental care teams will have better access to important health information that can support safer clinical decisions and more accurate treatment planning.

Patients will also use the system to manage key parts of their care, such as completing forms, reviewing information, managing appointments, making payments, and updating personal details.

What Patients Need to Do

To prepare for this change, patients will need to either create a MyChart account or update their existing MyChart account.

If You Already Have a MyChart Account:

If you already use MyChart through Michigan Medicine or another Epic-connected health care organization, you may be able to use your existing MyChart account for your School of Dentistry care.

Before your next visit, you may be asked to:

- Confirm your contact information
- Update your insurance information
- Review your medications
- Update allergies and health history
- Complete required forms
- Confirm communication preferences

Keeping your MyChart account up to date will help us provide safe, efficient, and coordinated care.

If You Do Not Have a MyChart Account

If you do not already have a MyChart account, you will need to create one.

The School of Dentistry will provide instructions for setting up your account, including how to access MyChart from a computer, smartphone, or tablet.

Once your account is created, you will be able to use MyChart to manage many parts of your dental care online.  (START HERE link)

Why This Change Matters

Your oral health is connected to your overall health. Medical conditions, medications, allergies, and treatments can all affect dental care.

By using Epic and MyChart, the School of Dentistry will be able to better connect your dental care with important health information from other Epic-connected organizations, when appropriate and permitted.

This may include information such as:

- Allergies
- Medications
- Medical diagnoses
- Health conditions
- Recent medical treatments
- Relevant information from other Epic-connected health organizations

Having this information available in one secure system helps your care team better understand your health needs and provide care that is coordinated, informed, and safe.

How Patients Will Benefit?

Safer, More Coordinated Care

Epic will help our dental providers see a more complete picture of your health. This can improve communication across care teams and help reduce the chance of missing important information.

For example, if you receive care through Michigan Medicine or another Epic-connected organization, relevant information may be available to your School of Dentistry care team to support your dental treatment.

Convenient Access Through MyChart

MyChart will give School of Dentistry patients a secure and convenient way to manage many parts of their care online.

MyChart is available online and through a mobile app, making it easier to manage your care from your computer, phone, or tablet.

A More Streamlined Patient Experience

Epic and MyChart will help our dental providers and staff manage key patient care workflows more efficiently. This means better coordination behind the scenes and a smoother experience for patients before, during, and after visits.

Over time, this may help reduce duplicate requests for information, improve appointment and billing processes, and support more consistent communication.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What Is M-Dentistry MiHealth?

M-Dentistry MiHealth is a secure online patient portal that gives you convenient access to parts of your health record and care experience.

If you do not have a MyChart account, you will need to create one before or during the transition.

What Is Epic?

Epic is an electronic health record system used by many leading hospitals, clinics, and health care organizations across the country.

Epic helps care teams securely document, access, and share patient health information. It also powers MyChart, the secure online portal patients will use to manage parts of their care.

Many organizations in Michigan and beyond use Epic, including Michigan Medicine, Trinity Health, Corewell Health, and others.

How will the U-M School of Dentistry patients use MyChart?

The School of Dentistry will use MyChart as part of our new Epic electronic health record system. MyChart will be an important tool for managing your dental care.

Do I need to create a MyChart account?

What if I already have a MyChart account?

Why do I need to update my MyChart account?

Updated information helps your care team provide safe and effective care. Your medications, allergies, health conditions, insurance, and contact information can all affect your dental treatment and patient experience.

Will my medical information be shared with my dental care team?

When appropriate and permitted, your dental care team may be able to view relevant health information from other Epic-connected organizations. This can help support safer and more informed dental treatment.

Access to patient information is limited to authorized users and is governed by privacy laws and institutional policies.

Will this change affect my appointments?

We are working carefully to make this transition as smooth as possible. You may notice changes to appointment reminders, forms, check-in, billing, or payment processes as we begin using MyChart.

We will share instructions before any action is needed.

Is my information safe in MyChart?

Yes. MyChart is a secure patient portal. Protecting patient privacy remains a top priority, and the School of Dentistry will continue to follow all applicable privacy laws, university policies, and health care security requirements.
