Image Valerie Nieto, RDH, MS Clinical Lecturer in Dentistry vkbarnes@umich.edu Biography My professional journey began with an Associate’s Degree in Liberal Studies from Montcalm Community College (2009) and an Associate’s Degree in Applied Arts and Science, Dental Hygiene, from Grand Rapids Community College (2015). I went on to earn both my BS (2017) and MS (2019) in Dental Hygiene at the University of Michigan, where I was the first Teaching and Clinical Research Fellow. I am currently pursuing a Doctor of Healthcare Science degree at Pacific University, Oregon, with expected completion in 2026. My research focuses on OSCE utilization in education and the bi-directional relationship between gastroparesis and oral health. I have published in leading journals including the Journal of Dental Hygiene, Journal of Dental Education, International Journal of Dental Hygiene, and Frontiers in Oral Health. In addition to teaching and research, I serve the profession through the Michigan Dental Hygienists’ Association as Finance Council Co-Chair and Education Council Co-Chair, promoting education, advocacy, and leadership within dental hygiene.
