The ADEA Postdoctoral Application Support Service (PASS) is a standardized application service for dentists applying to advanced dental education programs. The School of Dentistry programs that require the PASS application are Orthodontics, Prosthodontics, and Pediatric Dentistry.

Attention: All Pediatric Dentistry applicants (domestic and international) should now use the PASS application.
  1. Create a PASS account and fill out the application (see the ADEA PASS Application Instructions for more details).
  2. Submit the following items directly to PASS:
Dental School TranscriptsOfficial transcripts from every dental school attended should be submitted to PASS from the issuing institution. For international dental schools, applicants can submit an official transcript (in English) or a course-by-course evaluation through World Education Services (WES) or Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE).
Institution Evaluation Form (IEF)The dean of the applicant’s dental school should fill out an IEF through PASS.
3 Professional Evaluation Forms (PEF)Three PEFS are required and should be filled out by evaluators of the applicant’s choice through PASS.
National Board Dental Examination (NBDE) Part I

The NBDE Part 1 is required of all Orthodontics applicants and domestic Pediatric Dentistry applicants. Results should be reported on the applicant’s IEF by the dental school dean. Do not request your NBDE score reports to be sent to PASS or to the University of Michigan; an official report is not needed.

Please note: The NBDE is not required for international Pediatric Dentistry applicants.
Curriculum Vitae (CV)A CV/résumé is required for Orthodontics and recommended for Pediatric Dentistry. It should be uploaded to the PASS application.
Undergraduate TranscriptsTranscripts from undergraduate institutions are not required but can be uploaded to the PASS application if desired.
  1. Register with the Postdoctoral Dental Matching Program (Match).
  2. Submit the following items directly to the University of Michigan (not applicable to all applicants):
Graduate Record Examination (GRE) OR Advanced Dental Admissions Test (ADAT) scores

The GRE OR ADAT is required to apply to the Orthodontics program. Scores should be electronically submitted to the University of Michigan using institution code 1839 (no department code). Paper copies are not accepted. ADAT scores are submitted to PASS directly (and not to our school) and for more information on sending GRE scores, visit the ETS website.

Please note: The GRE is not required for the Pediatric Dentistry program.
iBT TOEFL ScoresThe TOEFL is required for all foreign applicants who attended dental school outside of the US and Canada, regardless of citizenship or native language. Scores should be electronically submitted to the University of Michigan using institution code 1839 (no department code). The minimum accepted overall TOEFL score is 84. The exam score must be current (less than two years old). Paper copies are not accepted.
  1. All application materials must be received by the intended program’s application deadline.

The Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry* programs, along with the Prosthodontic program, participate in the Postdoctoral Dental Matching Program. After all interviews are complete and Match results are announced, accepted candidates will be contacted to submit a secondary University of Michigan application.

Please note: International applicants to the Pediatric Dentistry program do not participate in Match. International applicants are considered later in the cycle, after Match results are announced. Decisions for international Pediatric Dentistry applicants can be expected after February 1 of each cycle.
