Dr. Sunil Kapila Publishes New Orthodontics Textbook

Ann Arbor, MI — December 9, 2014 — Dr. Sunil Kapila, chair of the Department of Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, has published a new textbook, Cone Beam Computed Tomography in Orthodontics: Indications, Insights, and Innovations.

“Because there is so much conflicting information among orthodontists and researchers about cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), my goal was to organize the information and present it in a way that both groups could use,” Kapila said.  “This book does that.  It provides current and objective information that readers need to know and that they can use to help them be more effective, whether it’s in an orthodontics clinic or conducting research.”

The book is organized in four sections to help readers progress sequentially through specific topics.  Each topic builds on the other.  Part I provides basic information on cone beam computed tomography.  Part II presents principles and protocols for CBCT imaging in orthodontics.  Part III includes critical information on CBCT-based diagnosis and treatment planning.  Part IV covers practical aspects of CBCT clinical applications and treatment outcomes.

Kapila said he got the idea for the book planning the 39th Annual Moyers Symposium.  Held at U-M in March 2012, the symposium focused on how cone beam computerized tomography is being used in orthodontics.  “It took about two years from start to finish,” he said.  “It was a big undertaking that included defining the objectives of the book and each chapter, guiding the authors, editing each chapter, ensuring chapters were consistent in format and that the information was cross-referenced.”

Forty-one authors contributed to the textbook, including leading orthodontic and radiology experts from North America, South America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.  Kapila wrote or co-authored seven of the 23 chapters in the textbook.

The 544-page book is supplemented with two DVDs featuring nearly 15 hours of video from the 39th Annual Moyers Symposium and the 38th Annual International Conference on Craniofacial Research Presymposium, held in March 2013.  The book can be ordered online from Wiley Publishing at:

Kapila is also the director of the Graduate Orthodontics Program at the U-M School of Dentistry, the Thomas M. and Doris Graber Endowed Professor of Dentistry.
