To achieve minimally-invasive, precise and predictable intraoral soft and hard tissue surgical outcomes by promoting periodontal and implant microsurgery by providing education, hands-on trainings, and research to residents, general dentists, and specialists.
- Level 1: Fundamental courses on basic periodontal and implant surgical knowledge, principles and skills
- Level 2: Intermediate courses on use of operating microscope for oral diagnosis, non-surgical and simple surgeries, e.g. probing, scaling/root planing, socket augmentation, single implant placement, etc.

Graduate Periodontal Clinics at the University of Michigan
A brand new clinic will open in 2020 on the 3rd floor of the Dental School Building. It will have 12 treatment units for non-surgical and minor surgery needs, in addition to 3 surgical suites for major periodontal and implant surgeries. There will be one floor-mounted operating microscope for examinations, diagnosis and non-surgical treatments and one to two wall/ceiling mounted operating microscopes in the surgical suites.
Conveniently located in downtown Jackson, approximately 30 min west of the Dental School, Dr. Padbury’s office is equipped with one wall-mounted Zeiss Pico microscope for performing routine periodontal and implant related procedures. Dr. Chan practices in Dr. Padbury’s office on Thursdays. Fellows will have an opportunity to observe microsurgeries in this office as part of the training requirements.
Seven Lakes Periodontics
Located 40 min north of Ann Arbor, this is where Dr. Velasquez practices microsurgeries on a daily basis. This office is equipped with 2 wall-mounted Zeiss Pico microscope. Fellows will have an opportunity to observe microsurgeries in this office as part of the training requirements.
Our clinical strengths are to apply operating microscope to daily periodontal and implant therapy, including socket augmentation, sinus augmentation, guided tissue regeneration, guided bone regeneration and periodontal plastic surgery, etc. Enhanced magnification and illumination allow for a minimally invasive and precise surgical approach. Under microscopy, surgical incision, soft and hard tissue management and suturing can be executed perfectly. Detailed surgical skills translate into higher predictability, better clinical outcomes and reduced patient morbidity.
Use of operating microscope can ensure total debridement of the socket and via minimally invasive tissue management maximal wound stability can be achieved.
Operating microscope enables augmented vision during osteotomy and Schneiderian membrane elevation. Minimizing window size could reduce patient morbidity and maximize wound healing for better clinical outcomes.
Under microscopy, the Schneiderian membrane can be seen such that a blind osteotome technique becomes a visible and predictable procedure.
Regenerative periodontal surgery was performed with the aid of operating microscope, which enabled precise incision, tissue management calculus/dental plaque removal, and suturing.
Operating microscope allows for precise incision, flap reflection, flap releasing and wound closure.
