First-Time Participants
Step One: Find a Faculty Mentor
The School of Dentistry has many outstanding faculty members who offer a wide range of research experiences for students.
For this reason, first-time participants are required to meet and discuss possible research projects with at least three potential mentors. This allows you to see the breadth of research within the School and make an informed decision based on your interests and expectations.
Begin by consulting the list of mentors. These faculty members have indicated their willingness to serve as mentors for the coming year.
Attend "Student Research Program Preview" in early fall. All SRP faculty mentors are invited to present a poster highlighting their research. Posters will remain displayed until noon the next day.
At this event, former SRP participants will also be available to discuss their research and experiences in the program.
Meet individually with faculty members to discuss research options. When you talk with potential mentors about a project, remember to ask them about the level of training and supervision required.
Ask each faculty mentor to sign the Mentor Interview Form. After three mentors have signed the form, rank your choices from 1 to 3.
Return the form to the Office of Research. Forms are due in mid October.
Every effort will be made to give you your first mentor choice, but we cannot guarantee this. Most students are matched with either their first or second choice. You will be notified by email of your assigned mentor.
Meet your mentor to discuss the project and complete the SRP application forms. Information and instructions are available on the SRP application page.
