Elisabeta Karl

Ann Arbor, Mich., Jan. 18, 2018 -– Two School of Dentistry faculty members have been named to the University of Michigan Interprofessional Leadership Fellows program for 2018.

Danielle Furgeson and Elisabeta Karl are among 21 U-M educators joining the third year of the fellows program, coordinated by the Michigan Center for Interprofessional Education. Its goal is to ensure that students enrolled in the nine health science schools on U-M’s three campuses gain the knowledge and skills to become effective members of the collaborative health care teams of the future. The initiative seeks to align and integrate the needs and interests of health professions education and collaborative practice to transform the way students are prepared, with an emphasis on curriculum development, clinical innovation and evaluative research.

Furgeson is a clinical associate professor in the Dental Hygiene Department and director of the graduate dental hygiene program. Her doctoral studies focused on IPE in dental hygiene and accreditation standards. She has continued to pursue IPE as the primary focus of her research, working on projects such as a certificate for integrated behavioral health and primary care, offered through the U-M School of Social Work, and IPE-focused motivational interviewing workshops.

Karl joined the School of Dentistry as an assistant professor in the Department of Cariology, Restorative Sciences and Endodontics in 2014. Her teaching interests include pre-clinic teaching and integrative dentistry. Her primary research interests are non-pharmacological, complementary and alternative approaches to reduce anxiety in dental students with the use of breathing exercises, music and art therapy. She is also interested in interdisciplinary work with students.

More information on the Fellows program is available on the Center for Interprofessional Education website.
