Jeffrey L. Shotwell, D.D.S., M.S., associate professor of dentistry in the School of Dentistry, retired from active faculty status on October 31, 2008.

Dr. Shotwell received his D.D.S. degree from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry in 1971. After serving as a Dental Officer for the United States Navy from 1971 to 1973, Dr. Shotwell did his graduate education at the University of Michigan, receiving his M.S. in 1976 in Prosthodontics. During his graduate work, Dr. Shotwell was a clinical instructor at the School of Dentistry. He was named assistant professor of dentistry in 1976 and promoted to associate professor in 1980.

He received numerous awards and honors over the course of his teaching career including the Dr. Paul Gibbons Award in 1977, 1978, 1992, and 1993, and the 2006 Instructor of the Year Award for the University of Michigan students in Pierre Fouchard Academy of the MDA. He also received many Instructor of the Year awards from the prosthodontic graduate clinic students. His teaching activities included instructing in the junior and senior undergraduate clinics from 1973 to 2008 and in the prosthodontic graduate clinic from 1977-1984 and again from 1999-2004. He also helped develop as well as teach numerous undergraduate and graduate courses. Additionally, Dr. Shotwell served on numerous thesis committees from 1978 until 2007.

He has published 15 articles and 10 abstracts and given over 20 presentations at research seminars and lectures. He is a member of the International Association of Dental Research, the American Association of Dental Research, the F.B. Vedder Society, the Kingery Prosthodontic Study Club, and the Michigan Society of Prosthodontists where he served as Peer Review Chair from 1989-1991. Dr. Shotwell was an active member of the University of Michigan community. He served as the Ombudsman for the Dental School from 1993-2002 and was a representative to the University Senate Assembly from 1996 to 1999. Within the School of Dentistry, Dr. Shotwell was a member of numerous committees, most recently as a member of the Strategic Assessment Facilitating Committee and the Quality Assurance Committee.

The Regents now salute this distinguished faculty member by naming Jeffrey L. Shotwell, professor emeritus of dentistry.
